About

A hobbyist taking photography more seriously

I photograph to transform the physical world around us
– to use the expectation that photography is merely documentation to challenge our relationships with our surroundings
– to use the discrepancy between what the camera records and what our eyes see to take the viewer on a journey
– to craft opportunities for friends to realize their own experiences, lives, and perspectives within my photographs

I shoot film (4×5 and MF) and digital. Each medium has a different approach that influences and shapes the images. With digital, experimentation is encouraged and the quick feedback fosters learning. With large format, the process becomes more calculated and thoughtful. The lessons from one art form help me to become better at the other. I make an attempt with my photography to transform scenes by photographic or digital means into images that others can, hopefully, enjoy

Well, that’s what I can pretend to be doing anyways, but really I’m just messing around
